ABOUT COCKTAILS |
Just what a cocktail should be,how it should be made, when it should be served, are frequently(o.k. occassionally) subjects of controversy. Take the Martini, most famous of all cocktails: Somepeople wouldn't drink a martini if it were the only liquid on a desert island(this is probably sensible as it would dehydrate the unsuspecting slurper). Some will look down their noses at any bafoon(their word not mine) that drinks anything else. Some will drink Martinis only before dinner. And among those who do partake there is the perpetual argument as to the right Gin, the right proportion of Gin, whether to stir or shake(shaking chills the drink more), and whether to add an olive, onion, lemon-peel or nothing. Gladly Cocktails needn't be confusing. They serve three entirely different needs and should be served accordingly. FIRSTLY: Cocktails provide an exceedingly graceful and a pleasant way to drink for those who enjoy the relaxation or stimulation of alcohol- they are simply gin, whiskey, brandy or rum, pleasantly coloured, flavoured and served in a pretty glass.*Use 2 ounces or more of liquor per cocktail for such drinkers. SECONDLY(and perhaps most pretensiously):Cocktails are excellent stimulators of the appetite when they are not sweet, and provide a perfect before-dinner course which awakens the palate as it relaxes the nerves. THIRDLY: Cocktails offer the seldom-drinker a pleasantly flavoured small quantity of alcohol to drink for social purposes.*Use about 1 ounce of alcohol per cocktail for these strange creatures. | |||||||||||||
